7 ideas for an atmospheric garden

A garden is much more than a patch of land with plants. It is an extension of your home: a place to relax, enjoy and have fun. Whether you have a large backyard or a cozy city garden, with the right elements you can turn it into a nice outdoor space that suits your style. In this blog we share inspiring ideas to give your garden a fresh, natural and stylish boost.

The garden is the place where indoors and outdoors merge. You want to be able to enjoy nature here, both alone and with friends or family. With a few thoughtful choices, you can turn your outdoor space into an attractive, comfortable and personal place. In this blog you will find plenty of garden inspiration to make your garden a nice place to enjoy all year round. Curious about even more inspiration? In this earlier blog, we listed the garden trends for 2025.

1. Make your garden a second living room

The trend towards outdoor living is continuing: we spend more and more time in our garden, from the first rays of spring sunshine until well into autumn. That is why you should create a comfortable lounge area where you can really relax. Think soft cushions, an outdoor rug, a few attractive lanterns and – just as important – seating that invites you to relax, such as the Bear Chair®! Wooden garden furniture is a perfect match for rustic seating. They give warmth, natural charm and fit with almost any garden style. Of course, you can also purchase comfortable cushions with it.

2. Create different atmospheres in your garden

Just as you have different rooms inside, each with its own function, you can also create zones outside: a place to eat, a corner to read, a play area for the children or a piece of “wild garden” where bees and butterflies feel at home.

Use plants, pergolas, decking or even large flower pots as natural dividers. Work with height differences or different substrates (grass, gravel, wood) to visually distinguish the areas.

3. Wood as a connecting element

It should be obvious: we love wood. Whether you love a country, modern or bohemian style, wood is a rewarding base. It exudes tranquility, blends beautifully with outdoor spaces and lives with the seasons. It is precisely that weathered character that makes wooden garden furniture so charming. Over time, they take on a lived-in look that is perfect for a natural garden.

Do choose durable wood, such as western red cedar, which is naturally weather-resistant and long-lasting. Bear Chair furniture is a great example of this: made of Canadian cedar, which ages beautifully without treatment and can withstand our Dutch weather. Moreover, the wood comes from sustainably managed forests, an added bonus for those who want to make conscious choices.

4. Provide shelter and atmosphere

A garden is only really inviting if you can sit in a sheltered place. A pergola with climbing plants, a shade cloth or a green hedge offer protection from the wind or sun and provide security. Lighting also plays a major role in the atmosphere. Hang light garlands between trees or over a pergola, place solar lamps along the garden path or choose a few stylish wall lights near the seating area.

If you have the space for it, you can also place a fire basket or a small outdoor fireplace. This provides wonderful, comfortable warmth on chilly days and makes sitting outside extra cozy.

5. Bring inside out

The most beautiful gardens feel like an extension of your interior. Therefore, choose colors, materials and accessories that match your personal living style. Make your outdoor space a space where you can live just as well as inside. Put away a nice table, for example, so that you can also work outside on warm days. Or choose an extensive garden set, so that you can enjoy dining here with your partner, family or relatives on beautiful evenings.

6. Also consider small gardens

Do you have a balcony, patio or narrow city garden? Then don’t be limited. Even in a small area you can create a lot of atmosphere. Choose furniture that fits the scale of the space. For example, our compact, folding Bear Chair® takes up much less space than a full set, while allowing you to sit comfortably and enjoy the outdoors.

Use pots and containers to create height and depth, work with hanging plants or a vertical garden against the wall and keep the color palette calm to make the space look larger.

7. Let nature do its work

A garden doesn’t have to be perfect. Just a little looseness creates character and that relaxed atmosphere. Combine these natural elements with a few conscious choices in furniture and decor, and you get a garden that lives and suits you. Take your time to decorate your garden in a way you like. That way you can enjoy it for years to come!
