A country garden exudes tranquility, space and a natural beauty. No clean lines or modern materials, but rather a loose, perhaps slightly romantic atmosphere with lots of greenery, natural elements and cozy corners. How to design such a garden? We will tell you in this blog!
A country garden is really a place to unwind; life seems to take place at a slower pace here. If you are going to decorate a country garden, it is good to stick to a few guidelines. In this way, you will prevent the look from becoming cluttered.
A loose, organic layout
A country garden is not so much about perfection, but much more about atmosphere and experience. Therefore, avoid too many tight lines, or symmetry. It is better to choose a playful layout and winding paths, round borders and staggered heights. A gravel path that meanders between the flowers, a small seating area under a tree or a wall of pile stones give the garden an informal and natural structure.
Work with natural materials
A country garden is supposed to match nature. You really want to feel like you are in the greenery. For the materials in your garden, it is best to choose natural materials such as wood, gravel, shells, natural stone and weathered metal. Avoid shiny plastic or sleek concrete, which fits better with a modern environment.
For example, go for a terrace of stepping stones and gravel, choose border edges of Corten steel and go for wooden garden furniture, such as the Bear Chair lounge set. This will give your garden a playful and natural look.
Let the planting take the lead role
In a country garden, lush planting is a must. Flowers, plants and shrubs are allowed to flourish here. Choose borders with a mix of perennials, ornamental grasses, herbs and bulbs for an impressive look. Combine tall and low plants and let some of them hang over the path or lawn. A little looseness instantly gives your garden a different feel.
Consciously add structure
It may sound easy to design a country garden; after all, you want it to be somewhat lush. However, if you don’t add any structure at all, it becomes cluttered. A country garden looks best if you work with sightlines and if there is also something to see at eye level. Think of a simple pergola with climbing plants such as roses or clematis, an espalier, or a wooden fence overgrown with honeysuckle.
Go for cozy seating areas
A country garden can be quite large, so a few nice seating areas are a must. Look carefully at where you want to place those seating areas. Find out where the sun is at what time of day and place the seating so that you can choose a place in the sun or shade at any time of day. Furthermore, you can also create seating areas for different purposes. For example, you can create a terrace with a dining table and chairs, a sitting area to enjoy a cup of tea and a corner where you can stretch out on a chair in the sun. Also look for privacy. By using some taller plantings, you can shield the seating areas from each other or from the public space. This way you always have a spot where you can enjoy your garden and find peace and quiet.
